At Washington Elementary in Caldwell, Idaho students must fill out a refocus form for misbehavior. Students are immediately asked to take the form to another classroom and begin filling it out. The refocus form asks the student what they did, how it made the other person feel, and what they will do differently next time. Three refocuses in one week automatically gives the student a detention. If students get three or more refocuses in one week they will not be allowed to participate in the end of quarter detention free party.
Giving refocuses falls under "2d Managing Student Behavior" because my students already know their behavior expectations and I implement those expectations by following through with refocuses. Down below you can view two refocus forms I gave to two of my students. One student was being disrespectful to another teacher on the playground and the other student was writing on himself with a marker. Getting refocuses is a big deal for students but I see it as an opportunity to learn and start fresh the next day. I always tell my students why they are getting a refocus but I never undermine them.
